The tree lot

The lot is stocked with hundreds of unique shade and ornamental trees, and the fruit tree area is restocked and ready to plant: citrus, figs, persimmons and pomegranates, deciduous fruit trees, berries, and avocados, olives and pecans.

Native shrubs for local landscapes

San Antonio sits at the endpoint of several eco-regions — the Texas Hill Country, the South Texas plains, the Blackland Prairie and the Post Oak Savanna — so there is no shortage of native options. Where it gets tricky is finding native substitutes for the cookie-cutter evergreens that populate so many suburban property lines.

Cenizo, or Texas sage, is the ultimate South Texas shrub: it basks in summer sun with or without water, and tolerates hedge shears to boot. Among the most drought-tolerant of all big landscape shrubs, it makes a standard by which others can be measured. Humidity and rain bring storms of pink flowers into its branches, which earned it the nickname barometer bush. Texas mountain laurel is the other one worth knowing, and both are easily available here at the nursery.
